It is natural that when two persons meet they would continue their conversation. They may want to know where the other comes from, or what the other person does and so on. Here are some conversations in such everyday situations. এটি স্বাভাবিক যে যখন দুজন লোকের সাক্ষাৎ হয়, তখন তাদের মধ্যে কথোপকথন হয়। তারা জানতে চাইতে পারেন যে অপরজন কোথা থেকে এসেছেন, অথবা অপরজন কী করেন এবং আরও অনেক কিছু। এখানে প্রতিদিনের এমনসব পরিস্থিতির কিছু কথোপকথন দেওয়া হলো।
A. Listen to and then practise the conversations below with your class friends. নিচের কথোপকথনগুলো শোনো এবং তারপর তোমার শ্রেণির বন্ধুদের সাথে অনুশীলন করো।
i) Mamun and his friend Akash have gone to a book fair. A lot of people have also come. They are all talking. laughing and buying books. Mamun introduces Akash to someone. Akash cannot hear his name because of the noise around. মামুন ও তার বন্ধু আকাশ একটি বইমেলাতে গিয়েছে। আরও অনেক লোক এসেছে। তারা সবাই কথা বলছে, হাসছে এবং বই কিনছে। একজনের সাথে মামুন আকাশকে পরিচয় করিয়ে দেয়। আকাশ তার নাম শুনতে পারেনি আশেপাশের কোলাহলের কারণে।

A1. Imagine that you are at a bus/railway station. A friend introduces you to somebody. You couldn’t. hear his/her name properly for the sound around. Now, make a conversation among you, your friend and the new person. কল্পনা করো, যে তুমি একটি বাস/রেল স্টেশনে আছো। একজন বন্ধু তোমাকে কারও সাথে পরিচয় করিয়ে দেয়। আশে পাশের শব্দের কারণে তার নাম তুমি ভালোমতো শুনতে পারো নি। এখন তুমি, তোমার বন্ধু এবং নতুন ব্যক্তিটির মাঝে একটি সংলাপ তৈরি করো।
Ans. A conversation among me, my friend and a new person is as follows: আমি, আমার বন্ধু এবং একজন নতুন ব্যক্তির মধ্যে কথোপকথন নিচে দেওয়া হলো:
My friend: Hello! Fahim, this is my new friend. I’d like to introduce you to him. – হ্যালো, ফাহিম, এ আমার নতুন বন্ধু। আমি তোমাকে তার সাথে পরিচয় করিয়ে দিতে চাই।
New person: Hello! My name is….. – হ্যালো, আমার নাম…..
Myself: Hello! My name is Fahim. I’m sorry that I couldn’t catch your name properly. Would you please tell me your name again? – হ্যালো, আমার নাম ফাহিম। আমি দুঃখিত যে আমি আপনার নাম ঠিকমতো শুনতে পারিনি। আপনি কি অনুগ্রহ করে আপনার নামটা পুনরায় বলবেন?
New person: Sure, my name is Hasan. Nice to meet you. – নিশ্চয়, আমার নাম হাসান। আপনার সাথে পরিচিত হয়ে ভালো লাগল।
Myself: Nice to meet you, too. Where are you from, Hasan? – আপনার সাথে পরিচিত হয়ে আমারও ভালো লাগল। হাসান, আপনি কোথা থেকে এসেছেন?
Hasan: I’m from Sylhet. – আমি সিলেট থেকে এসেছি।
ii) Sometimes the same questions can be asked in a different way. Here is a conversation between an Immigration officer and a passenger at the Shahjalal International Airport, Dhaka. Listen to the conversation first and then practise it with a partner. – কখনো কখনো একই প্রশ্ন ভিন্নভাবে জিজ্ঞেস করা যায়। এখানে ঢাকার শাহজালাল আন্তর্জাতিক বিমানবন্দরে একজন অভিবাসন কর্মকর্তা ও একজন যাত্রীর মধ্যকার একটি কথোপকথন রয়েছে। প্রথমে সংলাপটি শোনো এবং তারপর একজন সঙ্গীর সাথে অনুশীলন করো।

A2. In the above conversation the officer asks the passenger first time “Where do you come from?” and again he asks the passenger “And where are you coming from now?” Why? – ওপরের কথোপকথনটিতে কর্মকর্তা যাত্রীকে প্রথমবার জিজ্ঞাসা করেন “আপনার বাড়ি কোথায়?” এবং পুনরায় তিনি যাত্রীকে জিজ্ঞাসা করেন “এবং আপনি এখন কোথা থেকে এসেছেন?” কেন?
Ans. In the above conversation, the officer asks the passenger first time “Where do you come from?” to know his birth place. He again asks the passenger “And where are you coming from now?” to know the place from where he is coming. – ওপরের কথোপকথনে কর্মকর্তা প্রথমবার যাত্রীকে তার জন্মস্থান সম্পর্কে জানতে প্রশ্ন করেন “আপনার বাড়ি কোথায়?” আবার, তিনি এই মুহূর্তে কোথা থেকে এসেছেন তা জানতে তিনি যাত্রীকে পুনরায় প্রশ্ন করেন, “আপনি এখন কোথা থেকে এসেছেন?”
iii) It’s the first day in the new class after the annual exam. The boy sitting next to Joy is a new student. Listen to and practise the conversation below. – বার্ষিক পরীক্ষার পর এটি নতুন শ্রেণির প্রথম দিন। জয় এর পাশে বসা ছেলেটি নতুন শিক্ষার্থী। নিচের কথোপকথনটি শোনো এবং অনুশীলন করো।

A3. Joy asks Sajed “Where do you come from, Sajed?” What could Joy ask him instead? – জয় সাজেদকে জিজ্ঞাসা করলো, “তোমার বাড়ি কোথায়, সাজেদ?” জয় তাকে এর পরিবর্তে কী জিজ্ঞাসা করতে পারতো?।
Ans. Joy asks Sajed “Where do you come from, Sajed?” Joy could ask instead, “Where is your birth place, Sajed?” – জয় সাজেদকে জিজ্ঞেস করেছে “তোমার বাড়ি কোথায়, সাজেদ?” জয় তার পরিবর্তে জিজ্ঞেস করতে পারতো, “তোমার জন্মস্থান কোথায়, সাজেদ?”
iv) Mamun and Akash are talking about Mamun’s cousin Ruma. Listen to and practise the conversation in pairs. – মামুন এবং আকাশ মামুনের চাচাতো বোন রুমাকে নিয়ে কথাবার্তা বলছে। কথোপকথনটি শোনো এবং জোড়ায় জোড়ায় অনুশীলন করো।

A4. Listen to the conversation between Akash and Mamun, and between Rabeya and Mary again.
What difference do you find in the questions “What is she doing at the moment?” and “What does she do?” – আকাশ এবং মামুনের মধ্যকার, এবং রাবেয়া এবং মেরীর মধ্যকার কথোপকথন আবার শোনো। “তিনি এই মুহূর্তে কী করছেন” এবং “তিনি কী করেন?”, এই প্রশ্নগুলোর মাঝে তুমি কী পার্থক্য খুঁজে পাও?
Ans. “What is she doing at the moment?” refers to her activities at that very moment. But “What does she do?” refers to her profession. – “তিনি এই মুহূর্তে কী করছেন?” এটা বলতে তার সেই মুহূর্তের কাজকে বোঝায়। কিন্তু “তিনি কী করেন?” এ বলতে তার পেশাকে বোঝায়।
B. Look at the pictures below. Ask and answer questions about what each person’s profession is, and what he or she is doing at the moment. নিচের ছবিগুলো দেখো। প্রতিটি ব্যক্তির পেশা কী এবং তিনি এই মুহূর্তে কী করছেন সে সম্পর্কে প্রশ্ন জিজ্ঞাসা করো এবং উত্তর দাও।

What is he/she doing now? তিনি এখন কী করছেন?

He/she is not -. (not doing what he/she usually does, e.g. He is not seeing a patient.) – তিনি – করছেন না। (তা করছেন না যা তিনি সচরাচর করেন, উদাহরণস্বরূপ- তিনি রোগী দেখছেন না।)
