The Garden

Frog was in his garden. Toad came walking by.
“What a fine garden you have, Frog.” he said.
“Yes,” said Frog. “It is very nice, but it was hard work.’
“I wish I had a garden,” said Toad.
“Here are some flower seeds.
Plant them in the ground,” said
Frog, “and soon you will have a garden.”
“How soon?” asked Toad.
“Very soon,” said Frog.

কোলাব্যাঙ তার বাগানেই ছিল। কুনোব্যাঙ হেঁটে হেঁটে আসলো।
“তোমার কী সুন্দর একটি বাগান আছে, কোলাব্যাঙ,” সে বললো।
“হ্যাঁ,” কোলাব্যাঙ বলল। “এটি খুব সুন্দর কিন্তু কঠোর পরিশ্রমের।”
“আমার যদি একটি বাগান থাকতো,” কুনোব্যাঙ বললো।
“এই নাও কিছু ফুলের বীজ। এগুলো মাটিতে বুনে দাও,” কোলাব্যাঙ
বললো, “এবং শীঘ্রই তুমি একটি বাগান পাবে।”
“কতটা শীঘ্রই?” কুনোব্যাঙ জানতে চাইলো।
“খুব শীঘ্রই,” কোলাব্যাঙ বললো।
Toad ran home. He planted the flower seeds.
“New seeds,” said Toad, “start growing.”

কুনোব্যাঙ দৌড়ে বাড়ি গেল। সে ফুলের বীজগুলো বপন করলো।
“নতুন বীজ”, কুনোব্যাঙ বললো, “গজাতে শুরু করো।”
Toad walked up and down a few times. The seeds did not start to grow.
Toad put his head close to the ground and cried, “Now seeds, start growing!”
The seeds did not start to grow.
Toad put his head very close to the ground and shouted, “NOW SEEDS START GROWING!”

কুনোব্যাঙ কয়েকবার উপর নিচে হাঁটাহাঁটি করলো। বীজগুলো গজাতে শুরু করল না।
কুনোব্যাঙ তার মাথা মাটির কাছাকাছি রাখলো এবং জোরে জোরে বললো, “এখন বীজগুলো, গজাতে শুরু করো!”
বীজগুলো গজাতে শুরু করলো না।
কুনোব্যাঙ তার মাথা মাটির খুব কাছাকাছি রাখলো এবং চিৎকার করলো, “এখন বীজগুলো গজাতে শুরু করো!”
Frog ran up the path. “What is going on?” he asked.
“My seeds will not grow,” said Toad.
“You are shouting too much,” said Frog.
“These poor seeds are afraid to grow.”
“My seeds are afraid to grow?” asked Toad.

কোলাব্যাঙ পথ ধরে দৌড়ে এলো। “কী হচ্ছে?” সে জিজ্ঞাসা করলো।
“আমার বীজগুলো গজাবে না,” কুনোব্যাঙ বললো।
“তুমি অতিরিক্ত চিৎকার করছো,” কোলাব্যাঙ বললো।
“দুর্বল বীজগুলো গজাতে ভয় পাচ্ছে।”
“আমার বীজগুলো গজাতে ভয় পাচ্ছে?” কুনোব্যাঙ জানতে চাইলো
“Yes,” said Frog. “Leave them alone
for a few days. Let the sun shine on them, let
the rain fall on them. Soon your seeds will
start to grow.”
That night Toad looked out his window.
“Oh, no!” cried Toad. “My seeds have
not started to grow. They must be afraid of the dark.”

“হ্যাঁ,” কোলাব্যাঙ বললো। “ওগুলোকে কিছুদিনের জন্যে একা রেখে দাও। ওদের ওপর সূর্যের আলো পড়তে দাও,
ওদের ওপর বৃষ্টি পড়তে দাও। শীঘ্রই তোমার বীজগুলো গজাতে শুরু করবে।”
ঐ রাতে কুনোব্যাঙ তার জানালা দিয়ে বাইরে তাকিয়ে ছিল।
“ওহ্, না।” কুনোব্যাঙ আর্তনাদ করে উঠলো। “আমার বীজগুলো গজাতে শুরু করেনি।
তারা নিশ্চয়ই অন্ধকারকে ভয় পাচ্ছে।”
Toad went out to his garden., “I will read the seeds a story,” said Toad.
Toad read a long story to his seeds. All the next day Toad sang songs to his seeds.
And all the next day Toad read poems to his seeds.

কুনোব্যাঙ বাইরে তার বাগানে গেল।
“আমি বীজগুলোকে একটি গল্প পড়ে শোনাবো, কুনোব্যাঙ বললো।
কুনোব্যাঙ তার বীজগুলোকে বড় একটি গল্প পড়ে শোনালো।
পরের সারাটি দিন কুনোব্যাঙ তার বীজগুলোকে গান শোনালো।
এবং তারপরের সারাদিন কুনোব্যাঙ তার বীজগুলোকে কবিতা শোনাল।
And all the next day Toad played music for his seeds.
Toad looked at the ground. The seeds still did not start to grow.

“What shall I do?” cried Toad. “These seeds are still afraid to grow.”
Then Toad, became very tired, and he fell asleep.
“Toad, Toad, wake up,” said Frog. “Look at your garden!”
Toad looked at his garden. Little green plants were growing up out of the ground.
“At last,” shouted Toad, “my seeds are not afraid anymore.”

“কী করবো আমি?” কুনোব্যাঙ চিৎকার করে বললো। “এই বীজগুলো এখনও গজাতে ভয় পাচ্ছে।” ততক্ষণে কুনোব্যাঙ খুব ক্লান্ত হয়ে পড়েছিল, এবং সে ঘুমিয়ে পড়লো।
“কুনোব্যাঙ, কুনোব্যাঙ, ওঠো,” কোলা ব্যাঙ ডাকল। “তোমার বাগান দেখো।”

“And now you will have a nice garden, too,” said Frog.
“Yes,” said Toad, “but you were right, Frog. It was very hard work.”

A3. Punctuation marks: Punctuation marks are special symbols used in writing to separate sentences and phrases. They show how a piece of text should be read and understood. The most common punctuation marks in English are: (বিরামচিহ্ন হলো-লেখায় বাক্য এবং শব্দগুচ্ছ আলাদা করতে ব্যবহূত বিশেষ প্রতীকসমূহ। এগুলো দেখায় কীভাবে একটা পাঠ বা বার্তা পড়তে ও বুঝতে হবে। ইংরেজিতে সবচেয়ে বহুল ব্যবহৃত বিরাম চিহ্নগুলো হলো:)
Full stop (.) – This shows that the sentence has ended. [পূর্ণচ্ছেদ/দাড়ি (./।) এটা দেখায় যে বাক্যটি শেষ হয়েছে।
Comma (,) – This indicates a short pause in the sentence. [কমা (,)- এটা বাক্যের মাঝে একটা স্বল্প বিরতি বুঝায়।
Question Mark (?) – This is used when asking a question. [প্রশ্নবোধক চিহ্ন (?) – যখন কোনো প্রশ্ন জিজ্ঞাসা করা হয় তখন এটা ব্যবহার করা হয়।।
Exclamation Mark (!) – This shows excitement or surprise! [আশ্চর্যবোধক চিহ্ন (1) – এটা উত্তেজনা বা বিস্ময় প্রকাশ করে।।
Quotation Marks (“”) – These are used to show that someone is speaking. [উদ্ধৃতি চিহ্ন (“”) – কেউ বলছে সেটা দেখাতে এগুলো ব্যবহৃত হয়।]
Now, read the story “The Garden” again carefully. Identify the punctuation marks in the story, and notice how they are used. (এখন মনোযোগ দিয়ে “The Garden” গল্পটি আবার পড়ো। গল্পটিতে বিরামচিহ্নগুলো শনাক্ত করো, এবং লক্ষ করো সেগুলো কীভাবে ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে।)
