Unit 3 Lesson 4 Change in Pastimes in Bangladesh: Hello everyone! My name is Tiya. My friend, Anusha and I are going to do a presentation on Pastime Habits of Classes 9 and 10 students in our school. There are 120 students, 60 in class 9 and 60 in class 10.

A. Tiya and Anusha decided to make a survey on students’ pastimes in their class. After the survey they presented their findings in a chart. Look at the chart and read how they explain their findings. (টিয়া ও আনুশা তাদের ক্লাসের ছাত্র-ছাত্রীদের অবসর-বিনোদনের ওপর একটি জরিপ তৈরি করার সিদ্ধান্ত নিল। জরিপের পর তারা তাদের অনুসন্ধানের ফলাফল একটি, তালিকায় উপস্থাপন করল। তালিকাগুলো লক্ষ কর এবং তারা যেভাবে অনুসন্ধানী ফলাফলের ব্যাখ্যা দেয় তাও লক্ষ কর।)

Tiya: Hello everyone! My name is Tiya. My friend, Anusha and I are going to do a presentation on Pastime Habits of Classes 9 and 10 students in our school. There are 120 students, 60 in class 9 and 60 in class 10.
টিয়া: এই যে সবাই শোন। আমার নাম টিয়া। আমার বন্ধু আনুশা ও আমি আমাদের বিদ্যালয়ের ৯ম ও ১০ম শ্রেণির ছাত্রছাত্রীদের অবসরবিনোদন অভ্যাসের ওপর কিছু পরিসংখ্যান উপস্থাপন করতে যাচ্ছি। ১২০ জন ছাত্র-ছাত্রীর মধ্যে ৬০ জন ৯ম শ্রেণির ও ৬০ জন ১০ম শ্রেণির।
The classes have gender equity. Each class has 30 male and 30 female students.
শ্রেণিতে লৈঙ্গিক সমতা রয়েছে। প্রত্যেক শ্রেণিতে ৩০ জন ছাত্র ও ৩০ জন ছাত্রী রয়েছে।
The survey shows that 22.3 percent of students in classes 9–10 like games and sports as their most favourite pastime, which is the 4th option given by classes 5–6 students.
জরিপটি দেখায় যে, ৯ম ও ১০ম শ্রেণির ২২.৩% ছাত্র-ছাত্রী প্রিয় বিনোদন হিসেবে খেলা-ধুলা পছন্দ করে, যা ৫ম–৬ষ্ঠ শ্রেণির ছাত্র-ছাত্রীদের বেলায় ৪র্থ স্থানে রয়েছে।
Watching television is the second choice (17.2%) by the first group in contrast to 31.2% of the second group.
টিভি দেখা প্রথম দলের ২য় পছন্দ (১৭.২%), যা ২য় দলের বিপরীত (৩১.২%)।
It is noteworthy that watching television is the first choice of the second group.
এটি উল্লেখযোগ্য যে, টিভি দেখা ২য় দলের ১ম পছন্দ।
A considerable number (13.7%) of 9–10 students like to chat with their friends and thus it becomes the third popular choice in the chart.
৯ম ও ১০ম শ্রেণির বেশকিছু (৩.৭%) সংখ্যক ছাত্র-ছাত্রী বন্ধুদের সাথে খোশগল্প করতে পছন্দ করে। এভাবে এটি তালিকায় ৩য় জনপ্রিয় পছন্দে পরিণত হয়েছে।
While this becomes one of the less important choices by the younger kids. Only 6.7% of the kids take it as their first priority.
যেখানে এটি বাচ্চাদের মাঝে কম গুরুত্বপূর্ণ পছন্দ। মাত্র ৬.৭% বাচ্চা এটিকে তাদের ১ম পছন্দ হিসেবে নেয়।
It’s interesting that both the groups like reading books. 12.9% of students of classes 9–10 take it as their favourite pastime.
মজার ব্যাপার হলো, উভয় দলই বই পড়তে পছন্দ করে। ৯ম–১০ম শ্রেণির ১২.৯% ছাত্র-ছাত্রী এটিকে তাদের প্রিয় বিনোদন হিসেবে নেয়।
The number is 11.7% for classes 5–6 students. ৫ম–৬ষ্ঠ শ্রেণির ছাত্রছাত্রীদের জন্য এ সংখ্যাটি ১১.৭%।
Besides, gardening is voted (10.7% of students) to be the 5th preference by the grown up group though it is not that much liked by the younger group.
এছাড়া বাগান করা ৫ম পছন্দ হিসেবে প্রাপ্ত বয়স্কদের মাধ্যমে নির্বাচিত (১০.৭% ছাত্রছাত্রী) হয়, যদিও কম বয়সীদের দল এটিকে খুব একটা পছন্দ করে না।
Only 6.1% of the young kids are involved in it. বাচ্চাদের মাত্র ৬.১% এর সাথে জড়িত।
This is interesting that though the higher number of students in classes 9–10 prefer attending social programs (9.1%) than students of classes 5–6 (7.8%).
মজার বিষয় হলো, যদিও ৫ম–৬ষ্ঠ শ্রেণির (৭.৮%) তুলনায় ৯ম–১০ শ্রেণির বেশিসংখ্যক ছাত্র-ছাত্রী (৯.১%) সামাজিক অনুষ্ঠানে অংশ নিতে পছন্দ করে।
Yet as a choice it is preferred by the latter group. It is the 5th choice for them while to the older group it is the 6th.
তবুও পছন্দ হিসেবে পরবর্তী দল এটিকে প্রাধান্য দেয়। এটি তাদের জন্য ৫ম পছন্দ যেখানে বেশি বয়সী দলের জন্য এটি ৬ষ্ঠ পছন্দ।
Young kids have greater fascination for playing games on the computers (20.9% like it as their first choice).
ছোট বাচ্চাদের কম্পিউটারে গেম খেলার প্রতি রয়েছে প্রবল আগ্রহ। ২০.৯% এটিকে তাদের ১ম পছন্দ হিসেবে বিবেচনা করে।
The chart shows that as the kids grow up, they lose their passion for computer games. According to the chart the ratio declines to 8.2% from 20.9%.
তালিকা দেখায় যে, বাচ্চারা যখন বড় হয়, তখন তারা কম্পিউটার গেমের আগ্রহ হারিয়ে ফেলে। তালিকা অনুযায়ী অনুপাতটি ২০.৯% থেকে ৮.২% এ হ্রাস হয়।
Finally, it can be said that the influence of television has impact on both the groups but the more students grow up, the more they opt for fields/gym.
সবশেষে বলা যায়, উভয়দলের উপরেই টিভির প্রভাব রয়েছে কিন্তু ছাত্র-ছাত্রীরা যত বড় হয়, ততই তারা মাঠ/শরীর চর্চা কেন্দ্র পছন্দ করতে শুরু করে।

Ans. They believe in gender equity. (তারা লিঙ্গ সমতায় বিশ্বাস করে।)
2. What are the survey findings regarding watching television? (টিভি দেখার ক্ষেত্রে জরিপের পর্যবেক্ষণ কী?)
Ans. The findings are that watching TV is the first choice of the students of classes 5-6 but it is the 2nd choice of the students of classes 9-10. (জরিপের ফলাফল হল, টিভি দেয়া ৫ম-৬ষ্ঠ শ্রেণির ছাত্র-ছাত্রীদের জন্য ১ম পছন্দ, কিন্তু ৯ম-১০ম শ্রেণির ছাত্র-ছাত্রীদের জন্য এটি ২য় পছন্দ।)
3. Which age group is more interested in socializing with others? (অন্যের সাথে সামাজিকীকরণের (আদান-প্রদান/মেশামেশি) ক্ষেত্রে কোন দল বেশি আগ্রহী?)
Ans. Students of classes 9-10 are more interested in socializing with others. (নবম-দশম শ্রেণির ছাত্র-ছাত্রীরা অন্যের সাথে সামাজিকীকরণে (আদান-প্রদান/ মেশামেশি) অধিক আগ্রহী।)
4. According to the chart, how do the kids change their pastimes when they are grown up? What changes does the chart for 9-10 reflect? (তালিকা অনুযায়ী বাচ্চারা যখন বড় হয় তখন তারা কীভাবে তাদের অবসর-বিনোদন পরিবর্তন করে? ৯ম-১০ম এর তালিকা কি পরিবর্তনকে প্রতিফলিত করে?) Ans. According to the chart when kids are grown up, they become more interested about field/gym rather than watching TV. Thus they change their pastime. Yes, the chart for 9-10 reflects my change. When I was a student of class five I liked to watch television. Now I am a student of class nine. At present 1 like to play cricket with my classmates. (তালিকা অনুযায়ী যখন বাচ্চারা বড় হয়, তখন তারা টিভি দেখার তুলনায় মাঠ/শরীরচর্চা কেন্দ্রের প্রতি অধিক আগ্রহী হয়। এভাবে তারা তাদের অবসর-বিনোদন পরিবর্তন করে। হ্যাঁ, নবম-দশম শ্রেণির তালিকাটিতে আমার পরিবর্তনের চিত্র প্রকাশ পায়। পঞ্চম শ্রেণির ছাত্র থাকাকালীন টিভি দেখতে পছন্দ করতাম। এখন আমি নবম শ্রেণির ছাত্র। বর্তমানে আমি সহপাঠীদের সাথে ক্রিকেট খেলতে পছন্দ করি।)

B. Work in groups. Make a chart on the pastimes of the students in your class and present it to your class. (দলবদ্ধভাবে কাজ কর। তোমার শ্রেণির ছাত্র-ছাত্রীদের বিনোদনের একটি তালিকা তৈরি কর এবং তোমার শ্রেণিতে উপস্থাপন কর।) Ans. A chart on the pastimes of the students in my class.
