A. Read the poem aloud and then recite it to the class. – কবিতাটি উচ্চস্বরে পড় এবং তা শ্রেণিকক্ষে আবৃত্তি করে শোনাও।
Whose Child is This?
“Whose child is this?” I asked one day
Seeing a little one out at play.
“Mine”, said the parent with a tender smile.
“Mine to keep a little while
To bathe his hands and comb his hair,
To tell him what he is to wear,
To prepare him that he may always be good
And each day do the things he should.”
“Whose child is this?” I asked again,
As the door opened and someone came in
“Mine,” said the teacher with the same tender smile.
“Mine,” to keep just for a little while,
To teach him how to be gentle and kind,
To train and direct his dear little mind,
To help him live by every rule
And get the best he can from school.”
“Whose child is this?” I ask once more,
Just as the little one entered the door.
“Ours”, said the parent and the teacher as they smiled,
And each took the hand of the little child.
“Ours to love and train together
Ours this blessed task forever.”

এ শিশুটি কার?
“এ শিশুটি কার?” আমি একদিন জিজ্ঞেস করোলাম
ছোট একটি শিশুকে বাইরে ক্রীড়ারত দেখে।
“আমার,” মা/বাবা আদরমাখা হাসি হেসে বললেন।
“আমার হাতে রাখতে হয় কিছুটা সময়
তার হাত ধুতে আর চুল আঁচড়াতে
সে কী পরবে তা তাকে বলতে
তাকে গড়ে তুলতে যাতে সে সব সময় ভালো থাকে
আর প্রতিটি দিন তা-ই করে যা তার করা উচিত”
“এ শিশুটি কার?” আমি আবার জিজ্ঞেস করোলাম,
যখন দরজা খুলে যায় আর কেউ একজন ভিতরে প্রবেশ করল
“আমার,” শিক্ষক একই রকম আদরমাখা হাসি দিয়ে বললেন।
“আমার,” ঠিক কিছুক্ষণ দেখাশুনা করতে,
কীভাবে নম্র ও ভদ্র হতে হয় তা শিক্ষা দিতে।
তার ছোট্ট কোমল মনকে প্রশিক্ষিত ও পরিচালিত করতে,
নিয়ম মেনে তাকে বাঁচতে সাহায্য করতে,
আর পাঠশালা থেকে সে সর্বোৎকৃষ্ট কিছু পেতে”।
“এ শিশুটি কার?” আমি আবারও জিজ্ঞেস করোলাম।
যখন ছোট একটা শিশু দরজা দিয়ে ঢোকে
আমাদের,” বাবা/মা আর শিক্ষক বললেন হাসিমাখা মুখে,
আর প্রত্যেকেই ছোট শিশুটির হাত ধরলেন।
“একসাথে আমাদের ভালোবাসার আর শেখানোর
এ পবিত্র দায়িত্ব আমাদের সব সময়ের।”

B. Read the poem silently and answer these questions: – কবিতাটি নিঃশব্দে পড় এবং এসব প্রশ্নের উত্তর দাও
1. Who asked the question, “Whose Child is This?” in the poem? – “এ শিশুটি কার” এই কবিতায় এ প্রশ্নটি কে করেন?)
Ans. The poet asked the question ” Whose Child is This?” in the poem (কবি তাঁর কবিতায় “এই শিশুটি কার? প্রশ্ন করেন।)
2. How many times did he / she ask the question, “Whose ‘child is this?” – “এ শিশুটি কার” এই প্রশ্নটি তিনি কতবার করেছেন?)
Ans. He/she asked the question, “Whose child is this?” three times. (তিনি তিনবার এ শিশুটি কার? প্রশ্নটি করেছেনে।)
3. Who answered the question in stanzas 1, 2, and 3? – ১, ২, ৩ স্তবকে কারা প্রশ্নটির উত্তর দিলেন?
Ans. In stanza 1, the parents answered the question. In stanza 2, the teacher answered the question. And In stanza 3, both parents and teacher answered the question together. (প্রথম স্তবকে বাবা-মা প্রশ্নের উত্তর দিয়েছেন। দ্বিতীয় স্তবকে শিক্ষক প্রশ্নের উত্তর দিয়েছেন। আর তৃতীয় স্তবকে বাবা-মা এবং শিক্ষক সম্মিলিতভাবে প্রশ্নের উত্তর দিয়েছিলেন।)

C. Read the poem silently again and list the things or activities both the parent and the teacher do individually and together. One is done for you. – নিঃশব্দে কবিতাটি আবার পড় এবং মা-বাবা ও শিক্ষক উভয়েই আলাদা আলাদাভাবে ও একত্রে করেন এমন কাজগুলোর তালিকা তৈরি করো। একটি তোমার জন্য করে দেওয়া হলো-

D. Discuss in groups and write an answer to this question : – দলবদ্ধভাবে আলোচনা করো এবং এ প্রশ্নটির একটি উত্তর লেখ।
Why do both parent and teacher smile and answer the question, “Whose child is this?” by saying “Mine” and “Ours”? – কেন “এ শিশুটি কার?” প্রশ্নটির উত্তরে মা-বাবা ও শিক্ষক উভয়েই হাসেন এবং বলেন, “আমার” ও “আমাদের”?
Ans.
Parents love their children and look after them. So in answer to the question “Whose child is this?” the parents says “Mine”. Here ‘mine’ is the possessive case of “I’. The child in the school is also loved and taken care of by a teacher. So, when the same question is asked to the teacher the reply is ‘mine’. Again when the same question is asked to both parents and a teacher the answer is “ours”. Here ‘ours’ is the possessive case of ‘we’. By ‘ours’ both the parents and the teacher mean that the child belongs to them both.
অনুবাদ: বাবা বা মা তাদের সন্তানকে ভালোবাসেন এবং দেখাশোনা করেন। তাই “এ শিশুটি কার?” প্রশ্নের উত্তরে বাবা বা মা বলেন, “আমার”। এখানে ‘আমার’ হলো ‘আমি’-র সম্বন্ধপদ। একজন শিক্ষকও শিশুকে বিদ্যালয়ে মায়া-মমতা দেখান এবং দেখভাল করেন। তাই, একই প্রশ্ন যখন শিক্ষককে করা হয় উত্তর আসে ‘আমার’। আবার একই প্রশ্ন বাবা-মা এবং শিক্ষক উভয়কে করা হলে উত্তর আসে “আমাদের”। এখানে ‘আমাদের’ হলো ‘আমরা’-র সম্বন্ধপদ। ‘আমাদের’ বলার মাধ্যমে বাবা-মা এবং শিক্ষক উভয়েই বোঝান যে, শিশুটি তাঁদের উভয়েরই।
