Next week Farabi comes to visit Flora in her house. They are having a chat. “Can you remember your first day at school, Flora?” Farabi asks. “Oh, yes, I can,” Flora says. “I can recall exactly what happened. Would you like to hear it?”
পরের সপ্তাহে ফারাবি ফ্লোরার সাথে দেখা করতে তার বাড়িতে আসে। তারা খোশ গল্প করছে।
“ফ্লোরা, তোমার কি বিদ্যালয়ের প্রথম দিনের কথা স্মরণে আছে?” ফারাবি জিজ্ঞেস করে। “ওহ্, হ্যাঁ, আমার মনে আছে।” ফ্লোরা বলে। “কী ঘটেছিল তা স্পষ্ট স্মরণ করতে পারি। তুমি কি শুনতে চাও?”
“I’d love to,” says Farabi. “Please tell me.” “আমি শুনতে চাই, ফারাবি বলে। “দয়া করে বল।”
“Okay,” says Flora. “It was 2006. I was then 6 years old. One day my mother said, “Flora, you’re going to start your school tomorrow.”
“বেশ” ফ্লোরা বলে। “এটি ২০০৬ সালের কথা। তখন আমার বয়স ছিল ৬ বছর। একদিন আমার মা বললেন, “ফ্লোরা তুমি আগামীকাল তোমার নতুন বিদ্যালয় শুরু করতে যাচ্ছ।”
I was very excited. I couldn’t think of anything else. I was always thinking about the school, the teachers and the students of our school. I couldn’t even sleep well that night. আমি খুব উত্তেজিত ছিলাম। আমি অন্য কোনো কিছুই ভাবতে পারছিলাম না। আমি সব সময়ই ভাবছিলাম বিদ্যালয়ের কথা; শিক্ষকদের কথা এবং আমাদের বিদ্যালয়ের ছাত্রছাত্রীদের কথা। এমনকি ওই রাতে আমি ভালো করে ঘুমাতেও পারি নি।
The next morning my mother woke me up early in the morning. I had a bath and put on my best clothes. Then I had breakfast and started for the school with my mother. পরের দিন সকালে মা আমাকে সকাল সকাল জাগিয়ে দিলেন। আমি গোসল করে সবচেয়ে ভালো জামাকাপড় পরলাম। তারপর নাস্তা করলাম এবং মায়ের সাথে বিদ্যালয়ের পথে রওয়ানা হলাম।
The school was not very far from our home. So we walked all the way. বিদ্যালয় আমাদের বাড়ি থেকে বেশি দূরে ছিল না। তাই পুরোটা পথ আমরা হেঁটে গিয়েছিলাম।

My First Day at School
I can very well recall the first day of my school. Then I was six years old. My parents decided to send me to Kalma Goverment Primary School. It is a good school in Rajshahi town. I was feeling a lot of excitement. One fine morning my mother prepared me for the school. She dressed me in my best clothes. Before I started for school I got nervous thinking about the new place and new faces. The school was a walking distance from our house. I walked catching my father’s hand. Within a few minutes we reached the school. My father introduced me with the Headmaster. First he asked me some questions, and at the end told me to recite a rhyme. He was highly satisfied with my performance. He patted on my shoulder and commented that I would do well in the school. My admission was completed. A teacher took me to a class. He introduced me with my classmates. I came out of my nervousness. One hour passed and our classes ended up. My father was still waiting for me. My classmates said good bye to me. At the end I left the school with a mindfull of joy and pleasure. These are the sweet memories of my first day at school.
অনুবাদ: আমি আমার বিদ্যালয়ের প্রথম দিনটি ভালোভাবে স্মরণ করতে পারি। তখন আমি ছয় বছরের ছিলাম। আমার বাবা-মা আমাকে কলমা সরকারি উচ্চ বিদ্যালয়ে পাঠানোর সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছিলেন। রাজশাহী শহরে এটি একটি ভালো বিদ্যালয়। আমি খুব উত্তেজনা অনুভব করছিলাম। একটি চমৎকার সকালে আমার মা আমাকে বিদ্যালয়ের জন্য প্রস্তুত করলেন। তিনি আমাকে আমার সবচেয়ে ভালো পোশাক পরিয়েছিলেন। বিদ্যালয়ের উদ্দেশ্যে রওয়ানা হওয়ার পূর্বে আমি নতুন জায়গা ও নতুন মানুষগুলোর কথা ভেবে স্নায়বিক দুর্বলতায় ভুগছিলাম। বিদ্যালয়টি আমাদের বাড়ি থেকে সামান্য দূরে ছিল। আমি আমার বাবার হাত ধরে হেঁটেছিলাম। কয়েক মিনিটের মধ্যে আমরা বিদ্যালয়ে পৌছিলাম। আমার বাবা আমাকে প্রধান শিক্ষক মহোদয়ের সাথে পরিচয় করিয়ে দিলেন। তিনি আমাকে কিছু প্রশ্ন জিজ্ঞেস করেছিলেন এবং শেষে একটি কবিতা মুখস্থ বলতে বললেন? তিনি আমার উত্তর শুনে খুশি হয়েছিলেন। তিনি আমার কাঁধে হাত বুলালেন এবং মন্তব্য করলেন যে, আমি স্কুলে ভালো করব। আমার ভর্তি সম্পন্ন হলো। একজন শিক্ষক আমাকে শ্রেণিকক্ষে নিয়ে গেলেন এবং আমার সহপাঠীদের সাথে পরিচয় করিয়ে দিলেন। আমি আমার অস্বস্তিবোধ হতে রক্ষা পেলাম। এক ঘণ্টা অতিক্রম হওয়ার পর আমাদের শ্রেণিকার্যক্রম শেষ হলো। বাবা আমার জন্য অপেক্ষা করছিলেন। আমার শ্রেণি বন্ধুরা আমাকে বিদায় জানালো। পরিশেষে আমি খুশিমনে বিদ্যালয় ত্যাগ করলাম। এ দিনটি আমার জীবনে একটি স্মরণীয় দিন হয়ে আছে।
