A. Listen and read. – শোন এবং পড়।
Rupa: So….. Ananda, we had a helpful class on dictionary, didn’t we? তো….. আনন্দ, অভিধানের ওপর আমরা একটা সহায়ক ক্লাস পেলাম, তাই নয় কী?
Ananda: Oh yes, very helpful. This is why I like Mrs Barua’s class She is one of my favourite teachers. – হ্যাঁ তাই, খুবই সহায়ক। এ কারণেই আমি মিসেস বড়ুয়ার ক্লাস পছন্দ করি। তিনি আমার প্রিয় শিক্ষকদের মধ্যে একজন।
Rupa: She is! I also like her very much. And she is very organised. She knows how to make us work in groups and pairs. So we are never bored. – তিনি তাই! আমিও তাঁকে খুব পছন্দ করি। আর তিনি খুবই গোছালো। তিনি আমাদেরকে দলবদ্ধভাবে ও দুজন দুজন করে কীভাবে কাজ করোতে হয় তা জানেন।
Ananda: By the way, I’ve another problem. Do you understand the ‘Table of Contents’ at the beginning of a book? -তবে যাহোক, আমার আর একটা সমস্যা আছে। তুমি কি বোঝ বইয়ের শুরুতে ‘সূচিপত্র’ কী?
Rupa: Hmmm…yes, I’ve learnt it from my elder sister. I can try to explain it to you, if you like. -হুম… হ্যাঁ। আমি আমার বড় বোনের কাছ থেকে এটি শিখেছি। তুমি চাইলে আমি এটি ব্যাখ্যা করতে পারি।
Ananda: So nice of you. I really need it. – তাহলে তো ভালোই হয়। আমার এটি আসলেই দরকার।
B. Work in pairs. Discuss when and how you can help each other with anything difficult in a lesson. – দুজন দুজন করে আলোচনা করো। কখন এবং কীভাবে তোমরা একে অপরকে কোনো পাঠের কঠিন বিষয়ে সাহায্য করতে পার তা আলোচনা করো।

S1: How can we help each other to understand a difficult lesson? (আমরা কীভাবে একটি কঠিন বিষয় বোঝার জন্য একে অপরকে সাহায্য করতে পারি?)
S2: Oh, yes. I think if we discuss that difficult topic or lesson among ourselves, that may become easier for us. (ও, হ্যাঁ। আমি মনে করি, আমরা যদি ওই কঠিন টপিক বা বিষয়টি নিজেদের মধ্যে আলোচনা করি তাহলে তা আমাদের জন্য আরও সহজ হয়ে যাবে।)
S3: That’s right. (ঠিক বলেছ।)
S1: I think, sometime someone of us might know that difficult thing and he or she can help others understand it. (আমি মনে করি, অনেক সময় কঠিন বিষয়টি আমাদের মধ্যেই কেউ জানতে পারে এবং সে অন্যদেরকে তা বুঝতে সাহায্য করতে পারে।)
S2: Yes, that’s also a good way of co-operation. (হ্যাঁ, এটিও সহযোগিতার ভালো পদ্ধতি।)
S1: In fact togetherness can make us overcome many difficulties. (প্রকৃতপক্ষে আমাদের একাত্মবোধ আমাদের অনেক সমস্যা দূর করতে পারে।)
S3: Exactly. We must co-operate one another, and then we all will be benifitted. (ঠিক। আমরা অবশ্যই একে অপরকে সহযোগিতা করব, আর তাহলেই আমরা উপকৃত হবো।)
C. Read a content page of a book below individually and work in pairs to answer the questions that follow. – নিচে একটা বইয়ের সূচিপত্র আলাদাভাবে পড় এবং নিচের প্রশ্নগুলোর উত্তর দেয়ার জন্য দুজন দুজন করে কাজ করো।
Questions:
1. How many subjects/topics do you see here? -এখানে কতগুলো বিষয়/প্রসঙ্গ দেখতে পাচ্ছ?
Ans. We find six topics here. (এখানে আমরা ছয়টি প্রসঙ্গ দেখতে পাচ্ছি।)
2. What do the numbers on the right-hand side mean? – ডান পাশের সংখ্যাগুলো কী অর্থ নির্দেশ করে?
Ans. The numbers on the right-hand side mean the page numbers. (ডান পাশের সংখ্যাগুলো পৃষ্ঠা নম্বর নির্দেশ করে।)
3. Who do you think the people whose names are written after the subjects or topics are? – বিষয় বা প্রসঙ্গের নিচে যে নামগুলো লেখা আছে তাঁরা কারা বলে তোমার মনে হয়?
Ans. The people whose names are written after the subjects or topics are the writers. (যাঁদের নাম বিষয় বা প্রসঙ্গের পরে লেখা আছে তাঁরা হলেন লেখক বৃন্দ।)
4. What is each topic/subject called? – প্রত্যেকটি বিষয় বা প্রসঙ্গকে কী বলা হয়?
Ans. Each topic or subject is called title. (প্রত্যেকটি প্রসঙ্গ বা বিষয়কে শিরোনাম বলা হয়।)
D. Fill in the gaps with appropriate words from the box. – ছক থেকে সঠিক শব্দটি নিয়ে শূন্যস্থান পূরণ করো।
Read, and, books, are, topics, of, book, only, which, is;
Ans. The text above is a table of contents. It shows what subjects are there in a book, journal, magazine or in a research paper. So what is included in a book is shown in its table of contents. The table also shows a reader what the topics are, who the writers are, and which page a reader should open to read a particular topic. Sometimes in some books, topics are organised first in units and then in lessons. However, some books only show the chapters.
অনুবাদ: উপরের পাঠটি একটি সূচিপত্র। এটি একটি বই, সংবাদপত্র, সাময়িকী অথবা গবেষণা পত্রে কী বিষয়বস্তু আছে তা দেখায়। তাই একটি বইয়ের মধ্যে কী আছে তা সূচিপত্রে দেখা যায়। সূচিপত্রটি বইয়ের বিষয়বস্তু কী, লেখক কারা এবং কোনো একটি বিশেষ বিষয় জানার জন্য কোন পৃষ্ঠাটি খোলা উচিত তাও পাঠককে দেখায়। মাঝেমধ্যে কিছু বইয়ের বিষয়বস্তু প্রথমে ইউনিটে এবং পরে লেসনে সাজানো থাকে। যাহোক, কিছু বইয়ে শুধু অধ্যায় দেখানো থাকে।
