21 February is observed as Shaheed Dibosh every year throughout the country in remembrance of the martyrs of language movement of 1952. The commemoration begins at the early hours of the day with mourning songs that recall the supreme sacrifices of our language martyrs.
১৯৫২ সালের ভাষা আন্দোলনের শহীদদের স্মরণে ২১শে ফেব্রুয়ারি সারা দেশে প্রতি বছর শহীদ দিবস হিসেবে পালিত হয়। দিনের প্রথম প্রহর থেকেই শোকগাঁথা গানের মাধ্যমে এর সূচনা হয়, যা আমাদের ভাষা শহীদদের সর্বোচ্চ ত্যাগকে স্মরণ করে।
People wear black badges and go to the Shaheed Minar in barefoot processions, singing mourning songs. They place wreaths at the Minar. Many of them visit the graves of the martyrs at Azimpur graveyard and pray for them.
লোকেরা কালো ব্যাজ পরে খালি পায়ে মিছিল করে শহীদ মিনারে যায়, শোকগীতি গাইতে গাইতে। তারা মিনারে পুষ্পস্তবক অর্পণ করে। অনেকে আযিমপুর কবরস্থানে শহীদদের কবর জিয়ারত করেন এবং তাদের জন্য দোয়া করেন।
They also attend various programmes organised in remembrance of the language martyrs. The UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) on 17 November in 1999 proclaimed February 21 as the International Mother Language Day in recognition of the sacrifices of the martyrs for the rightful place of Bangla.
এছাড়া তারা ভাষা শহীদদের স্মরণে আয়োজিত বিভিন্ন অনুষ্ঠানেও অংশগ্রহণ করেন। ইউনেস্কো (জাতিসংঘ শিক্ষা, বিজ্ঞান ও সংস্কৃতি সংস্থা) ১৯৯৯ সালের ১৭ই নভেম্বর বাংলার যথাযোগ্য মর্যাদার জন্য শহীদদের ত্যাগকে স্বীকৃতি দিয়ে ২১শে ফেব্রুয়ারিকে আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস হিসেবে ঘোষণা করে।

কানাডার ভ্যাঙ্কুভারে বসবাসকারী দুই বাংলাদেশি প্রবাসী, রফিকুল ইসলাম ও আবদুস সালাম, তৎকালীন জাতিসংঘ মহাসচিব কফি আনানকে একটি প্রস্তাব পাঠান।
They requested him to declare 21st February as the International Mother Language Day. They added that the decision will honour and save all extinct languages of the world.
তারা তাঁকে ২১শে ফেব্রুয়ারিকে আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস হিসেবে ঘোষণা করার অনুরোধ জানান। তারা যোগ করেন যে, এই সিদ্ধান্ত বিশ্বের সব বিলুপ্ত ভাষাকে সম্মান দেবে এবং রক্ষা করবে।
As per their logical expectations the government of Bangladesh then took prompt initiative by sending formal proposal to UNESCO.

Finally, on 17 November 1999, UNESCO declared 21st February as the International Mother Language Day.

The day is now annually observed worldwide to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.

Ans. It is called ‘Shaheed Dibosh’ as our martyrs sacrificed their lives on this day for our language. (একে ‘শহীদ দিবস’ বলা হয় কেননা আমাদের শহীদগণ এই দিনে ভাষার জন্য তাদের প্রাণ উৎসর্গ করেছিলেন।)
2. Why do people go to the Shaheed Minar? How do they go there? (লোকজন কেন শহীদ মিনারে যায়? তারা কীভাবে সেখানে যায়?)
Ans. People go to the Shaheed Minar to show their respect to the martyrs. They go there barefooted in procession singing mourning song. (লোকজন শহীদ মিনারে যায় শহীদগণের প্রতি তাদের শ্রদ্ধা প্রদর্শন করতে। তারা খালি পায়ে শোভাযাত্রা সহকারে শোকসঙ্গীত গাইতে গাইতে সেখানে যায়।)

Ans.
Like every year, this year on 21 February, our school observed International Mother Language Day. We went to Shaheed Minar, offered flowers and wreaths to show respect to the martyrs of the Language Movement. Besides, we participated in different culturtal programmes organized by our school. We sang the song, “Amar bhaier rokte rangano……’’and promised to enrich our beloved Bangla language.
