B: In the picture young people are seen wearing traditional dresses. They are sitting in rows under a tree. (ছবিতে ঐতিহ্যবাহী পোশাক পরা তরুণ তরুণীদেরকে দেখা যাচ্ছে। তারা একটি গাছের নিচে সারিবদ্ধভাবে বসে আছে।)

B: I think, in the picture a cultural programme is focused. You see, some microphones are also seen in front of the stage. (আমার মনে হয় ছবিটাতে একটি সাংস্কৃতিক অনুষ্ঠানের প্রতি আলোকপাত করা হয়েছে। তুমি দেখ, মঞ্চের সামনে কতকগুলো মাইক্রোফোনও দেখা যাচ্ছে।)

B: I guess it was taken at the Ramana Batamul in Dhaka. (আমি অনুমান করি যে এটা ঢাকার রমনা বটমূলে তোলা হয়েছিল।)
A: What are the people in the picture doing? (ছবিতে লোকজন কী করছে?)
B: I think, the people here are performing at a cultural programme. Their traditional Bengali dresses suggest that it is nothing but a Pahela Boishakh celebration. So traditional Bengali songs and poems are likely being sung or recited in the picture. ‘Pahela Boishakh’ is the first day of Bangla new year. The day is a public holiday. This day has a special significance for us as it is a part of Bangalee culture and tradition. People from all walks of life, irrespective of their ethnic identity or religious beliefs, celebrate the day with traditional festivities. On this day, the whole of Bangladesh is in a festive mood. The day inspires people to start life with renewed hopes and aspirations.
পহেলা বৈশাখ বাংলা নববর্ষের প্রথম দিন। দিনটি সরকারি ছুটির দিন। আমাদের কাছে দিনটির একটি বিশেষ গুরুত্ব রয়েছে কারণ এটি বাঙালি সংস্কৃতি ও ঐতিহ্যের একটি অংশ। নৃ-তাত্ত্বিক পরিচয় ও ধর্মীয় বিশ্বাস নির্বিশেষে জীবনের সকল ক্ষেত্রের মানুষ ঐতিহ্যবাহী উৎসবের মধ্য দিয়ে দিনটি উদযাপন করে। এদিনে পুরো বাংলাদেশ উৎসবের মেজাজে থাকে। দিনটি মানুষকে নতুন আশা ও আকাঙ্ক্ষার মধ্যে দিয়ে জীবন শুরু করার অনুপ্রেরণা যোগায়।
Every year the day is celebrated traditionally. People wake up early in the morning, have a bath and wear traditional clothes. Women wear white sarees with red borders and adorn thomselves with colourful churis and flowers, while mon dress themselves in pajamas and punjabis. It is a day when people love eating traditional food.
প্রতিবছর দিনটি ঐতিহ্যের সাথে উদযাপিত হয়। লোকজন খুব সকালে ঘুম থেকে ওঠে, গোসল করে এবং ঐতিহ্যবাহী পোশাক পরে। তরুণীরা লাল পাড়ের শাদা শাড়ি পরে। নিজেদেরকে রঙিন চুড়ি ও ফুল দিয়ে সাজায়, যেখানে পুরুষেরা নিজেদেরকে পাজামা-পাঞ্জাবীতে সাজায়। এ দিনে লোকেরা ঐতিহ্যবাহী খাবার খেতে পছন্দ করে।
One of the most colourful events of the day is held in Dhaka. Early in the morning, people in hundreds and thousands pour in from all directions to attend the cultural function at Ramna Bajamul organised by Chhayanaut. The cultural programme begins just at sunrise and the renowned artists of the country take part in the programme that starts with the famous Tagore-song Esho-he-Boishakh, Esho Esho….Artists also sing traditional folk songs, and perform classical dances to the rhythm of musical instruments.
নববর্ষের সবচেয়ে বর্ণাঢ্য উৎসবগুলোর একটি হয় ঢাকায়। সকালের শুরুতে নানা দিক থেকে শত শত ও হাজার হাজার লোক রমনা বটমূলে ছায়ানট আয়োজিত সাংস্কৃতিক অনুষ্ঠানে অংশ নিতে জড়ো হয়। সাংস্কৃতিক অনুষ্ঠান যথাসময়ে শুরু হয় এবং দেশের প্রসিদ্ধ শিল্পীরা এতে অংশ নেয়। অনুষ্ঠান শুরু হয় রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের বিখ্যাত গান, “এসো হে বৈশাখ, এসো এসো” দিয়ে। পরে, শিল্পীরা ঐতিহ্যবাহী লোকগীতি গায় এবং উচ্চাঙ্গ নৃত্য উপস্থাপন করে।
People also come to join the colourful processions, the biggest carnival of the country, organised by the Fine Arts students of Dhaka University. The procession usually displays the traditional practices of Bangalee culture. The masks and wreaths worn by the people are so fascinating! Often they symbolise contemporary worries or happiness in the national life. It attracts an increasing number of foreign tourists every year.
লোকজন ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের চারুকলা আয়োজিত দেশের বৃহত্তম আনন্দমেলা বর্ণাঢ্য শোভাযাত্রায় যোগ দিতে আসে। শোভাযাত্রায় সাধারণত ঐতিহ্যবাহী বাঙালি সংস্কৃতিকে তুলে ধরা হয়। লোকজনের ব্যবহৃত মুখোশ ও মালা খুবই মনোমুগ্ধকর। এগুলো প্রায়শই জাতীয় জীবনের সমসাময়িক উদ্বেগ বা আনন্দকে প্রতীকায়িত করে। এটা প্রতিবছর ক্রমবর্ধমান সংখ্যক বিদেশী পর্যটকদের আকর্ষণ করে।
The day is also observed all over the country. Different social and cultural organisations and educational institutions celebrate the day with their own cultural programmes.
দিনটি সারা দেশজুড়ে উদযাপিত হয়। বিভিন্ন সামাজিক ও সাংস্কৃতিক সংগঠন ও শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠান তাদের নিজস্ব অনুষ্ঠানের মধ্য দিয়ে দিনটি উদযাপন করে।
On this day, newspapers bring out special supplements. There are also special programmes on the radio and television.
এই দিনে সংবাদপত্রগুলো বিশেষ ক্রোড়পত্র প্রকাশ করে। রেডিও ও টেলিভিশনেও বিশেষ অনুষ্ঠান থাকে।
The celebration of Pahela Boishakh marks a day of cultural unity for the whole nation.
