1.1 Look at the pictures. In pairs, ask and answer the following questions:

Answer: I like storybooks, adventure books, and books about science.

Rina: Hello! My name is Rina. Are you new here?

Rupa: Hi! I’m Rupa. My family has just moved to this neighbourhood.

Omar: Hi Rupa! I’m Omar. It seems you like reading books.

Rina: What kind of books do you like to read?

3.2 Stressed Words
• When we speak, some words in a sentence are said a little louder or with more emphasis. These are called stressed words.
• Stressed words help show the important part of the sentence.
Examples from the story with stressed words:
1. My family has just moved to this neighbourhood. → “just” is stressed; it tells when something happened.
2. I love to read storybooks. → “love” is stressed; it shows strong feeling.
3. What kind of books do you like? → “kind” is stressed; it asks about your choice.
4. I find science fictions very interesting. → “science fictions” is stressed; it tells favourite kind of book.
5. Will you come to the library tomorrow? → “tomorrow” is stressed; it asks about when.
How to practice:
• Read the sentences aloud, putting extra stress on the bold words.
• This helps understand which part of the sentence is most important.
3.2.1 Read the sentences using stress on the bold words
a) Do you like ice-cream?
• Stress on “Do” to show the question itself.
• Read like: DO you like ice-cream?
b) We play football every day.
• Stress on “play” to show the main action.
• Read like: We PLAY football every day.

• Stress on “red” to show the color of the bicycle.

• Stress on “Are” to emphasize the question about readiness.

• Stress on “studz” to show the main activity.
