Before the beginning of the 20th century, pearls were obtained from pearl oysters. These oysters were collected from the bottom of the ocean, lake or river.
To get enough pearl oysters, free-divers were often forced to descend to a depth of more than 100 feet in one breath. Because of the difficulty of diving, pearls at that time were of different quality as well as very rare.
In Asia some pearl oysters could be found on shoals at a depth of 5-7 feet from the surface. At times the divers had to go 40 feet or even up to 125 feet deep to find enough pearl oysters. These deep dives were extremely hazardous to the divers.

এশিয়াতে কিছু মুক্তা ঝিনুক পাওয়া যেত বালুচরের উপরিতল থেকে ৫-৭ ফুট গভীরে। অনেক সময় পর্যাপ্ত মুক্তা ঝিনুক পেতে ডুবুরিদের ৪০ ফুট বা এমনকি ১২৫ ফুট গভীর পর্যন্ত যেতে হতো। এই গভীর ডুবগুলো ডুবুরিদের জন্য ছিল মারাত্মক ঝুঁকিপূর্ণ।

In some fishing villages along the coast of Japan, there are amazing groups of women known as ‘Ama divers’. These women worked and are still working as Ama. The word ‘Ama’ means ‘women of the sea or sea women’. They are independent divers. They make their living by diving. They can dive to the depth of the sea up to 25 metres. And they dive without using oxygen tanks or other breathing equipment.
The Ama divers rely on their own skills and breathing techniques. They use that skill and technique to push themselves down to the bottom of the sea and back to the, surface again. They can hold their breath for up to two minutes. Careful watching, lung capacity and hunter instincts are the special qualities of Ama divers.
However some of these young villagers are going to the city in search of jobs. The remaining Ama divers are now aged between 50 and 60. But there are still some who continue to dive even at their 70s. If the young people do not take up Ama, diving, soon this profession will die out.
জাপানের সমুদ্র উপকূলের কয়েকটি মাছ ধরা গ্রামে ‘অ্যামা ডুবুরি’ নামে পরিচিত বিস্ময়কর নারী দল আছে। এই নারীরা অ্যামা হিসেবে কাজ করতো এবং এখনও করছে। ‘অ্যামা’ অর্থ “সাগরের নারী” বা “সাগর নারী’। এরা স্বাধীন ডুবুরি। তারা ডুবুরির কাজ করে জীবিকা নির্বাহ করে। তারা সাগরের ২৫ মিটার পর্যন্ত গভীরে ডুব দিতে পারে। এবং তারা অক্সিজেন ট্যাংক বা অন্যকোন শ্বাসপ্রশ্বাস উপকরণ ব্যবহার না করেই ডুব দেয়।
অ্যামা ডুবুরিরা তাদের নিজেদের দক্ষতা ও শ্বাস-প্রশ্বাস কৌশলের ওপর আস্থা রাখে। তারা নিজেদেরকে সমুদ্রের নিচে ঠেলে দিতে এবং উপরিতলে আবার ফিরে আসতে ঐ কৌশল ব্যবহার করে। তারা দুই মিনিটের বেশি সময় তাদের নিঃশ্বাস আটকে রাখতে পারে। অ্যামা ডুবুরিদের বিশেষ গুণগুলো হলো সতর্ক দৃষ্টি, ফুসফুসের ধারণক্ষমতা এবং শিকারি প্রবৃত্তি।
যাহোক তরুণ গ্রামবাসীদের কেউ কেউ চাকরি/কাজের সন্ধানে শহরে চলে যাচ্ছে। বাকি অ্যামা ডুবুরিদের বয়স এখন ৫০-৬০ এর মধ্যে। তবে এখনও অনেকে আছে যারা ৭০ বছর পর্যন্তও ডুবুরির কাজ চালিয়ে যায়। লোকজন যদি অ্যামা ডুবুরির কাজ গ্রহণ না করে তবে শিঘ্রই এ পেশা বিলুপ্ত হয়ে যাবে।
