A. Read aloud the story about a hospital window and think about the questions. – একটি হাসপাতালের জানালা সম্বন্দ্বে গল্পটি পড় এবং প্রশ্নগুলো সম্বন্দ্বে চিন্তা কর।
Two sick men were given the same room in a hospital. One man could sit up in his bed. His bed was next to the room’s only window. The other man spent all his time lying The men talked for hours almost every day. They talked about their wives and children, their homes, their jobs and almost about everything.
অনুবাদ: একটি হাসপাতালে দুজন অসুস্থ মানুষকে একই কক্ষ দেওয়া হয়েছিল। একজন তার বিছানায় উঠে বসে থাকতে পারতো। কক্ষের একমাত্র জানালার পরেই তার বিছানা। অন্যজন জানালার উল্টো দিকে তার বিছানায় শুয়ে সারাক্ষণ কাটিয়ে দেয়। প্রায় প্রতিদিনই তারা ঘণ্টার পর ঘণ্টা কথা বলে। তাদের সত্রী, ছেলে-মেয়ে, বাড়িঘর, চাকরি এবং প্রায় সবকিছু সম্বন্দ্বে তারা কথা বলে।
Q1. Can you guess why they talk about all these things? – তুমি কি অনুমান করতে পার কেন তারা এসব কিছু নিয়ে কথা বলে?
Ans. They talk about all these things to pass time and remove boredom. (সময় কাটাতে ও বিরক্তি দূর করতে তারা এসব বিষয়ে আলাপ আলোচনা করোত।)
Text: Every afternoon the man in the bed by the window would sit up and talk to his roommate about all the things he’ could see outside the window. The man on the other bed eagerly waited for this speaking and listening time. His friend’s vivid descriptions of passing things seen through the window inspired him to live.
অনুবাদ: প্রতিদিন বিকেল বেলা মানুষটি জানালার পাশে বিছানায় বসে থাকত এবং জানালা দিয়ে বাইরে যা কিছু দেখতে পেত তার সব কিছু সম্বন্ধে তার কক্ষসঙ্গীর সাথে কথা বলত।
অন্য বিছানার মানুষটি এই কথা বলা ও শোনার সময়ের জন্য অপেক্ষা করত। তার বন্ধুর জানালা দিয়ে দেখা জিনিসগুলোর জীবন্ত বর্ণনা তাকে বেঁচে থাকার অনুপ্রেরণা দিত।
Q2. Can you guess what the man near the window talked about to his friend? – তুমি কি অনুমান করতে পার জানালার পাশের মানুষটা তার বন্ধুর সাথে কী কথা বলেছিল?
Ans. Yes, I can. The man near the window talked to his friend about passing things seen through the window. But those things seen through the window were totally imginary. Because of the fact that the man near the window was completely blind. (হ্যাঁ, পারব। জানালার কাছাকাছি লোকটি তার বন্ধুর সাথে জানালা দিয়ে দেখা চলমান জিনিস সম্পর্কে থাকা আলাপ আলোচনা করেছিল। তবে জানালা দিয়ে দেখা এসব জিনিস পুরোপুরি কাল্পনিক ছিল। এর কারণ হলো জানালার কাছাকাছি লোকটি পুরোপুরি অন্ধ ছিল।
Text: The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water, while children floated their paper boats. A wonderful view of the skyline could be seen in the distance.
The man by the window told his friend all this in detail. The listener would close his eyes and see everything in his mind’s eye.
অনুবাদ: জানালা দিয়ে একটি সুন্দর হ্রদসহ পার্ক দেখা যেত। পাতিহাঁস ও রাজহাঁসেরা পানির ওপর খেলা করতো, যখন বাচ্চারা তাদের কাগজের নৌকা ভাসাতো। দূরে দিগন্তের চমৎকার একটা রূপরেখা দেখতে পাওয়া যেত।
জানালার পাশের লোকটি পুঙ্খানুপুঙ্খভাবে তার বন্ধুকে সব কিছু বলেছিল। শ্রোতা তার চোখ বন্ধ করে মনের চোখ দিয়ে সব কিছু দেখতে পেত।
Q3. What would the listener feel and do if one day his friend could not sit up and talk? – শ্রোতা কী ভাবত এবং করত যদি তার বন্ধু একদিন তার পাশে না বসত এবং কথা না বলত?
Ans. The listener would feel sad and spiritless but wanted to see the real world outside and he did it through his mind’s eye if one day his friend could not sit up and talk. (একদিন তার বন্ধু উঠে বসে কথা, বলতে না পারলে শ্রোতা বিষণ্ণ ও উদ্যমহীনতা অনুভব করত তবে বাইরের বাস্তব জগতকে দেখতে চাইত আর সে তার মনের চোখ দিয়ে তা করত।)
Text: Days and weeks passed. One morning the doctor came to the room on his daily round. He found the lifeless body of the man by the window. He died peacefully in his sleep. The doctor made all the arrangements to take the body away.
দিনের পর দিন এবং সপ্তাহের গর সপ্তাহ চলে যায়। একদিন সকালে। ডাক্তার তাঁর প্রাত্যহিক পরিদর্শনে কক্ষটিতে এলেন। তিনি জানালার পাশের মানুষটির প্রাণহীন দেহটা দেখতে পেলেন। সে ঘুমের মধ্যেই শান্তিতে মারা গেছে। ডাক্তার মৃতদেহটি নিয়ে যাওয়ার সব ব্যবস্থা করলেন।
The sad friend wanted to move to the empty bed next to the window. The doctor allowed him.
শোকাহত বন্ধুটি জানালার পাশের খালি বিছানাটিতে যেতে চাইল। ডাক্তার তাকে অনুমতি দিলেন।
On his new bed the man painfully propped himself up. He was very excited. He slowly looked through the window to see the real world outside. What did he see?
বেদনা নিয়েই মানুষটি তার নতুন বিছানায় উঠে বসল। সে খুবই উত্তেজিত ছিল। ধীরে ধীরে সে জানালা দিয়ে বাইরের প্রকৃত দুনিয়াটা দেখতে লাগলো। সে কী দেখল?
Q4. Can you guess what he saw? – তুমি কি অনুমান করতে পার সে কী দেখল?
Ans. Yes, I can. He saw nothing but a blank wall. (হ্যাঁ, পারব। সে দরজা জানালাহীন দেয়াল ছাড়া আর কিছুই দেখল না।)
Text: The window just faced a blank wall. He asked the doctor, “Doctor, I see nothing but a blank wall. How could my friend described so many wonderful things outside the window?”
জানালার মুখোমুখি একটা খালি দেয়াল ছিল। সে ডাক্তারকে প্রশ্ন করোল, “ডাক্তার, আমি তো একটি ফাঁকা দেয়াল ছাড়া কোনো কিছুই দেখতে পাচ্ছি না। কীভাবে আমার বন্ধু জানালার বাইরের এত সুন্দর সুন্দর জিনিসের বর্ণনা দিল?”
The doctor replied, “Did he? The man was completely blind!” ডাক্তার উত্তর দিলেন, “সে কি তাই করেছিল? মানুষটি তো পুরোপুরি অন্ধ ছিল।”

S1 : Friend, tell me why the blind man described all those wonderful thing outside the windiow. (বন্ধু, অন্ধ লোকটি কেন জানালার বাইরে ঐসব চমৎকার চমৎকার জিনিসের বর্ণনা করলো তা আমায় বল।)
S2 : I think, the blind man had much power of imagination. He did so to pass pleasantly. (আমি মনে করি, অন্ধ লোকটির অনেক কল্পনা শক্তি ছিল। আনন্দের সাথে সময় অতিবাহিত করতে সে তা করত।)
S3 : I think, he did so to remove boredom. (আমি মনে করি, বিরক্তি দূর করতে সে তা করত।)
S4 : Right. He did so to entertain and inspire his bed ridden friend. (ঠিক বলেছ। শয্যাশায়ী বন্ধুকে আনন্দ দিতে ও অনুপ্রাণিত করতে সে তা করত।)
S5 : Right you are. I think. he did so to enhance his friend’s curiosity to live more so that he might. See the wonderful world properly. (ঠিক বলেছ। আমি মনে করি।, অপূর্ব পৃথিবীকে সঠিকভাবে দেখাত বাঁচতে বন্ধুর কৌতূহল বাড়াতে সে তা করত।
