André
– Gwendolyn Brooks
I had a dream last time. I dreamed
I had to pick a Mother out.
I had to choose a Father too.
At first, I wondered what to do,
There were so many there, it seemed,
Short and tall and thin and stout.
But just before I sprang awake,
I knew what parents I would take.
And this surprised and made me glad;
They were the ones I always had.

গতবার আমি একটা স্বপ্ন দেখেছিলাম। স্বপ্নে আমি দেখলাম
একজন মাকে আমার খুঁজে নিতে হচ্ছিল।
একজন বাবাকেও পছন্দ করে নিতে হচ্ছিল।
প্রথমে, আমি ভাবলাম কী করব,
মনে হলো, সেখানে অনেকে ছিলেন,
খাটো ও লম্বা এবং শুকনো ও মোটা।
কিন্তু ঠিক হঠাৎ ঘুম ভাঙার আগে,
আমি বুঝলাম কোন বাবা-মাকে আমি নেব।
এবং এটি আমাকে বিস্মিত ও আনন্দিত করলো;
তারা ছিলেন সেই যারা সবসময় আমার ছিলেন।

In the poem, the poet tells us about the divine relationship between a child and its parents. If a child has to pick out its parents from a number of parents, it will choose its own parents. The child’s pleasure and comfort lie in choosing its own parents as they are always with the child as the best company.
(কবিতাটিতে কবি আমাদেরকে একটি শিশু ও তার পিতামাতার মধ্যকার স্বর্গীয় সম্পর্কের কথা বলেছেন। যদি একজন শিশুকে অনেকগুলো বাবা-মায়ের মধ্যে থেকে তার বাবা-মা বাছাই করতে হয়, তবে সে তার নিজের বাবা-মাকেই পছন্দ করবে। শিশুটির আনন্দ ও স্বাচ্ছন্দ্য নিজের বাবা-মাকে বেছে নেওয়াতেই কারণ বাবা-মা সর্বোত্তম সঙ্গী হিসেবে সবসময় শিশুটির সাথে থাকে।)
