A. It’s Friday evening. Mr. Farhad is watching television in the sitting room. His daughter Fahmida comes in. A tall, bearded man with long hair is playing a guitar and singing a song, “Bangladesh, Bangladesh…” on the television screen. Fahmida is thrilled to watch a foreigner singing a song on Bangladesh. She has the following conversation with her father about the song and the singer. শুক্রবার সন্ধ্যা। ফরহাদ সাহেব বসার ঘরে টেলিভিশন দেখছেন। তাঁর মেয়ে ফাহমিদা ভেতরে আসে। টিভির পর্দায় একজন দীর্ঘকায়, দাড়িওয়ালা এবং লম্বা চুলওয়ালা মানুষ গিটার বাজিয়ে গান গাইছেন, ‘বাংলাদেশ, বাংলাদেশ….’। একজন বিদেশি গায়ককে বাংলাদেশ নিয়ে গান গাইতে দেখে ফাহমিদা রোমাঞ্চিত হয়। সে তার বাবার সাথে গান এবং গায়ক সম্পর্কে নিচের কথোপকথনটি করেছে।
Fahmida: Father, who is this singer? He is not a Bangladeshi, is he? বাবা, এই গায়কটি কে? তিনি বাংলাদেশি নন, তাই না?
Mr. Farhad: You are right! He is not. He is a famous singer from England. His name is George Harrison. তুমি ঠিক বলেছ। তিনি (বাংলাদেশি) নন। তিনি ইংল্যান্ডের একজন বিখ্যাত গায়ক। তাঁর নাম জর্জ হ্যারিসন।

Mr. Farhad: That’s a huge story. Harrison was not only a famous singer but also a great humanist. Mr. Farhad: Well, the Concert for Bangladesh was held on the 1st August, 1971 at the Madison Square Garden, New York. George Harrison and some other famous musicians performed in that live concert in front of a audience of about forty thousand people. It was organised to make the world aware of the sufferings of Bangladesh during Liberation War. বেশ, বাংলাদেশের জন্যে সঙ্গীতানুষ্ঠানটি নিউইয়র্কের ম্যাডিসন স্কয়ার গার্ডেনে ১৯৭১ সালের ১লা আগস্ট অনুষ্ঠিত হয়েছিল। জর্জ হ্যারিসন এবং আরও কয়েকজন বিখ্যাত সংগীতশিল্পী প্রায় চল্লিশ হাজার দর্শকের সামনে ঐ সরাসরি সঙ্গীতানুষ্ঠানে অংশগ্রহণ করেছিলেন। স্বাধীনতা যুদ্ধ চলাকালীন বাংলাদেশের দুর্ভোগ সম্পর্কে বিশ্বকে সচেতন করতে এর আয়োজন করা হয়েছিল।
Fahmida: Wasn’t that great! এটি কি অসাধারণ নয়!
Mr. Farhad: Yes, it was great! The concert won huge support for the millions of war victims of Bangladesh. At the same time it raised millions of dollars for UNICEF relief fund. হ্যাঁ, এটি অসাধারণ ছিল! সঙ্গীতানুষ্ঠানটি যুদ্ধে ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত লক্ষ লক্ষ মানুষের জন্যে ব্যাপক সমর্থন লাভ করেছিল। একই সময়ে এটি ইউনিসেফের সহায়তা তহবিলের জন্যে লক্ষ লক্ষ ডলার সংগ্রহ করেছিল।

Yes, I know a song in Bangla that inspired the people of Bangladesh during the war of liberation in 1971. The first line of the song is “Mora ekti fulke bachabo bole juddho kori.” The singer of this song is Apel Mahmud. The first line of the song holds the complete meaning of the song. Its ‘English Version’ is “We fight to save a flower.” Here ‘Flower’ is the symbolic meaning of our motherland, Bangladesh. There is a great patritotic zeal in the song.
