Ans:
1. Where can you find this kind of boat? কোথায় এই ধরনের নৌকা দেখতে পাও?
Ans Basically we can find this kind of boat in riverine areas. (আমরা নদীনালাবহুল অঞ্চলে এই ধরনের নৌকা দেখতে পাই।)
2. Why does the boatman carry passengers across a river? নৌকার মাঝি নদীর মধ্য দিয়ে যাত্রী নিয়ে যায় কেন?
Ans. The boatman carries passengers to earn some money as there is no bridge. (মাঝি রোজগারের জন্য যাত্রীদের পারাপার করে কারণ সেখানে কোন সেতু নেই।)
3. Why do people use country boats? কেন লোকজন দেশীয় নৌকা ব্যবহার করে?
Ans. People use country boats because there is hardly any bridge over the rivers or cannals and these boats are easily available. (লোকজন গ্রাম্য নৌকাগুলো ব্যবহার করে কেননা নদী বা খালের ওপরে বলতে গেলে কোন সেতু যাকে না আর এসব নৌকা সহজেই পাওয়া যায়।)
B. Read the text and answer the following questions. পাঠটি পড়ো নিচের প্রশ্নগুলোর উত্তর দাও।
“Is there anybody here who has ever crossed a river by a country boat?”
কেউ কি এখানে আছে যে দেশী নৌকা দিয়ে নদী পাড়ি দিয়েছে?
“I have, teacher,” said Jamil. “And I clearly remember what happened in that journey.”
জামিল বলল, “আমি দিয়েছি, টীচার। এবং আমি পরিষ্কারভাবে স্মরণ করতে পারি সেই ভ্রমণে কী ঘটেছিল।”
“Would you please tell us what happened?” the teacher asked.
শিক্ষক জিজ্ঞেস করলেন “তুমি কী বলতে পারবে কী ঘটেছিল?”
“Okay, teacher. It happened when I was in class 6. On a weekly bazar day, people were coming back with their shopping bags and baskets in hands, on shoulders and heads. They had to cross the river. It was not a big river. There was a ferry boat plying on the river. The boat could cross it in 8-10 minutes. It was just after sunset. The weather was getting bad. The wind started blowing from the north-west. Black clouds were moving fast in the sky.
ঠিক আছে, টীচার। এটা ঘটেছিল যখন আমি ৬ষ্ঠ শ্রেণিতে পড়ি। এক সাপ্তাহিক বাজারের দিনে লোকজন তাদের হাতে, কাঁধে এবং মাথায় করে তাদের বাজারের ব্যাগ এবং ঝুড়ি নিয়ে ফিরছিল। তাদেরকে নদী পাড়ি দিতে হয়েছিল। এটা বড় নদী ছিল না। নদীতে একটি খেয়া নৌকা চলাচল করছিল। নৌকাটি আট থেকে দশ মিনিটের মধ্যে পার হতে পারত। সময়টা ছিল সূর্যাস্তের ঠিক পরপরই। আবহাওয়া আরো খারাপ হয়ে পড়ছিল। উত্তর পশ্চিম দিক থেকে বাতাস বইতে শুরু করেছিল। আকাশে কালো মেঘ ঘনিয়ে আসছিল।
Everybody was trying to get into the boat. ‘No more, no more, please wait,’ shouted the boatman. But nobody listened to him.”
প্রত্যেকে নৌকায় উঠতে চেষ্টা করছিল। মাঝি চিৎকার করে বলছিল ‘আর না, আর না, দয়া করে অপেক্ষা করুন’ কিন্তু কেউ তা শুনল না।
“What happened then, Jamil?” asked Rumi. “With too many people on board, the boat sank in the middle of the river,” replied Jamil.
রুমি জিজ্ঞেস করল ‘তখন কী ঘটল জামিল?’ জামিল উত্তরে বলল, ‘নৌকায় অনেক বেশি লোক নিয়ে নৌকাটি নদীর মাঝখানে ডুবে গিয়েছিল।’
“Oh no! What happened then?” asked the teacher. “Thank God. There were no casualtics. All the passengers swam to the other side. But some of them lost the stuff they were carrying such as oil, salt and milk,” said Jamil.
‘ওহ্ না। তারপর কী ঘটল?’ শিক্ষক জিজ্ঞেস করলেন।’ আল্লাহকে ধন্যবাদ। কেউ হতাহত হয়নি। সকল যাত্রী সাঁতার কেটে অন্য পাড়ে উঠেছিল। কিন্তু তাদের মধ্যে কেউ কেউ তাদের জিনিসপত্র যেমন তেল, লবণ এবং দুধ হারিয়েছিল”, জামিল বলল।
“Were you on the boat?” asked the toachor. “No, teachor. Secing the boat overcrowded, I waited for the next trip,” replied Jamil. “You did the right thing, Jamil.”
‘তুমি কি সেই নৌকায় ছিলে?’ শিক্ষক জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন। জামিল উত্তরে বলল “না, টীচার। নৌকার অতিরিক্ত ভীড় দেখে আমি পরবর্তী বারের জন্য অপেক্ষা করছিলাম।” “তুমি ঠিক কাজটিই করেছিলে, জামিল।”

d. he would not ferry people with bags and baskets. (হি যুড নট ফেরী পীল উইথ ব্যাগস আন্ড্ বাসকেটস)- সে ব্যাগ ও ঝুড়িসহ লোকজনকে পারাপার করতো না।

Here the phrase ‘on board’ means (হেয়ার দা ফ্রেজ “অন বোড” মিনস)- এখানে ‘on board’ শব্দগুচ্ছের অর্থ হলো

b. on the wooden board (অন দি ওডেন বোল্ড)- কাঠের পাটাতনে

5. There were no casualties কেউ হতাহত হয়নি।

1. Why did some people have, little or no patience when the ferry boat was in danger of sinking? (কেন খেয়া নৌকা ডুবে যাবার উপক্রমের সময় কিছু মানুষের ধৈর্য কম ছিল অথবা তারা একেবারে অধৈর্য হয়ে গিয়েছিল?
Ans. People thought that a storm was approaching and it was getting dark and if they couldn’t cross the river instantly they might fall in a big problem in case of returning home. So, some of them became impatient to get into the boat thought it seemed that the boat was overcrowded and in the danger of sinking. (লোকে ভাবছিল যে, ঝড় আসছে এবং অন্ধকার ঘনাচ্ছে এবং যদি তারা তক্ষুনি নদী পার হতে না পারে তবে বাড়ি ফেরার ক্ষেত্রে তারা বড় সমস্যায় পড়তে পারে। তাই যদিও দেখা যাচ্ছিল যে নৌকাটি অতিরিক্ত বোঝাই এবং ডুবে যাওয়ার ঝুঁকি আছে, তথাপি লোকজন নৌকায় চড়ার জন্য অধৈর্য হয়ে পড়লো।)

Ans. The boatman of the ferry said this. Every passenger was trying to get into the boat. But the boatman could realize the consequence of that impatience. So he was earnestly requesting the passengers to wait for the next term. (খেয়ার মাঝি একথা বলেছিলেন। প্রত্যেক যাত্রীই নৌকায় উঠার চেষ্টা করছিল। কিন্তু মাঝি এই অসহিষ্ণুতার পরিণাম উপলব্ধি করতে পেরেছিলেন। তাই তিনি যাত্রীদেরকে পরবর্তী পালার জন্য অপেক্ষা করতে সনির্বন্ধ অনুরোধ করছিলেন।)
3. Answer the questions below: নিচের প্রশ্নগুলোর উত্তর দাও।
a. If we have too many passengers at a bus or train station, what may happen? (যদি বাস অথবা ট্রেনের স্টেশনে অনেক যাত্রী থাকে, তাহলে কী ঘটতে পারে?)
b. If we have too many people in a village/town/city, what will happen? (যদি গ্রামে/শহরে/নগরে/অনেক লোক থাকে তাহলে কী ঘটতে পারে?)

a. If we have too many passengers at a bus or train station the buses or trains will be overcrowded and they will be in danger of facing accident. Moreover, all the passengrs waiting cannot get into the bus or train and will be late in their work. (যদি বাস অথবা রেলস্টেশনে অনেক যাত্রী থাকে তবে বাস অথবা ট্রেন অতিরিক্ত বোঝাই হয়ে পড়বে এবং তারা দুর্ঘটনার সম্মুখীন হওয়ার ঝুঁকিতে পড়বে। এছাড়াও অপেক্ষারত সকল যাত্রী বাস অথবা ট্রেনে চড়তে পারবে না এবং কাজে পৌঁছতে দেরি হবে।)
b. If we have too many people in village/town/ city, all the people cannot get their basic necessities of life: The effect of over population will be seen in all the sectors. (যদি গ্রামে/ শহরে/ নগরে অনেক লোক থাকে, সকলেই তাদের জীবনের মৌলিক চাহিদাগুলো অর্জন করতে পারবে না। অতিরিক্ত জনসংখ্যার ফল সকল ক্ষেত্রেই দৃশ্যমান হবে।)
